despite being a late gen z kid, i have this weird nostalgia for early 2000s stuff . maybe its because my parents were older and didnt adopt newer tech as quickly but i grew up using mostly cds, watching movies on dvd, not using netflix and instead waiting for something good to come on on pbs, going to the redbox for new movies (even if they were way too expensive lol) and all this really brought me to feel closer to people from the earler part of gen z, and the fact that i had cousins to admire who liked stuff from their childhood definitely helped . besides, media of that era is just cool

nowadays, stuff just isnt as cool . i know most of that is due to me getting older and the world losing alot more of its magic, but i think that theres also a point to be made that pop culture has also grown much more consumerist . not to say it wasn't consumerist in the early 2000s and before, it most certainly was . but to me, it seems like media has become alot more mass produced, just slop to eat up and pay a monthly subscription on before moving on to the next product . im not entirely sure why this is, and there are probably countless reasons, but id think its probably because of the creation of the phone and especially the iphone . a whole new massive, mostly non-technical audience gained access to the internet . (not that this is a bad thing, the whole world should be able to use the internet!) with that, websites had to become much more simple for use on a small screen, and there was the developement of social media and other things that appealed to having access at any moment you would like . its only gotten worse with the advent of short form content that appeals to just wasting time

as a result, im trying to be more intentional with the media i consume . for starters, i want to interact less with modern media . this isnt to say there arent new, interesting, and creative things being made, (for one indie games exist) but rather trying to distance myself from the consumerist mindset of the current world and just existing in a space that makes me feel happier, not out of escapism or nostaliga but a general appreciation for a by-gone era

i'd like to spend much more of my time reading and studying, both theory and fiction out of enjoyment . i love the internet and computers, so i want my time on it to feel meaningful and not idle . to me, this means spending soo much less time on youtube (especially not watching/listening to youtube and playing a game at the same time!) :P and much more time creating . i would like to code much more, it really helps me feel grounded and like im doing something that adds to the world . other than programming, i wanna spend more time exploring the indie part of the internet, and recreate that feeling where the internet was a place to discover cool things in rather than a store to consume in . that also means avoiding social media, which thankfully other than youtube i only really use to talk to friends or look at art

for whatever media i want to consume, i want it to be from around 2000-2013 . this especially applies to videogames (i dont really watch shows or movies) because i feel like that will let me avoid alot of the hyperstimulation of modern games which want you to spend as much time in them as possible . i already love 2000s music, and i want to interact more with physical media, or stuff that isnt controlled by someone else, like cds and mp3 files . its also fun just to build a collection of things i like

and as a part of that 2000s larp, that also means spending less time online, especially on the phone !!! trying to lock in the internet to one "place" (the computer) and allowing myself to just exist independently and unconnected in the real world, going on hikes and walks, working out, etc

and while this isnt 2000s larping, i really like 70s-90s soviet culture (i mean my favorite band ever is kino) and i just wanna experience more of that :3

so ya, thanks for reading and i hope ur inspired to enjoy more of teh world /ᐠ >⩊<マ₊˚⊹☆
